Location: Jupiter, FL
Industry: Dredging
Application: Sediment & Turbidity Control
Solution Provided: Type 2 DOT Turbidity Curtain
The Challenge
A client in Jupiter, Florida was tasked with dredging a canal to improve hydraulic flow for both recreational and commercial navigation. While essential for the waterway’s functionality, dredging inevitably disturbs sediment at the bottom of the canal. Without proper control measures, these suspended solids could travel downstream, impacting water quality, marine habitats, and compliance with environmental regulations.
The Objective
The project’s main goal was clear:
-
Contain suspended solids within the dredging zone.
-
Allow sediment to naturally settle without spreading into surrounding waterways.
-
Ensure full compliance with environmental requirements.
The GEI Works Solution
Our team designed and manufactured a Type 2 DOT Turbidity Curtain specifically for the conditions in Jupiter’s canal. This floating barrier was deployed along the construction area to form a secure perimeter around the dredging operation.
The curtain’s purpose was twofold:
-
Containment: Prevent sediment from escaping the work area.
-
Control: Allow water to flow while giving suspended particles time to settle inside the enclosed zone.
Results & Impact
With the turbidity curtain in place:
-
The client successfully maintained sediment within the designated area throughout the project.
-
Environmental disruption was minimized, protecting the local aquatic ecosystem.
-
The dredging operation stayed on schedule and in compliance with regulatory standards.
This project demonstrates how the right turbidity control solution can ensure dredging efficiency while protecting waterways.
